Lowlife

Found your dreams in magazines
Made cutups from their pasted faces
And all the while your own smile
Took you to the darkest places
You stayed numb and played dumb
And honed your antisocial graces
The high life – the low-lives
Never seem to find
The high times -the low-lives
Never leave behind
You scheme and pipe dream
Get rich quick or you’ll die trying
You tried the whole time
Selling out but they weren’t buying
You suit up you shoot up
Well designed to keep you flying
The high life – the low-lives
Never seem to find
The high times -the low-lives
Never leave behind
No they never leave behind
Broke up and broke down
Your resolve is slowly slipping
You give out you give in
Down and out and ego-tripping
You sold out you hold out
And now you spread your wings for clipping
The high life – the low-lives
Never seem to find
The high times -the low-lives
Never leave behind
No they never leave behind
They never leave behind

Weekend Warrior
03:23
|
|||
I’m the weekend warrior and my sword is drawn and raised
Potential victims slowly come in focus through the haze.
My advances uninvited temptation unrequited
There's nothing like a slight to take the wind out of my sails
I got nothing –is nothing good enough for you?
I got a bottle of wine and a pickup line that never fails
I’m nobody’s fool and I’m out of school and I’m telling tales
And I’ll be clean and sober Monday morning, but fair warning
All is fair in love and war and weekends
My chariot’s a shopping cart full of unrecycled cans
My home’s a cardboard mansion - but there’s expansion in my plans
I got some dreams and wishes, and the right to make demands
But when it came time to stand and fight, well, I just turned and ran
I got nothing – and nothing gets me down
I’m the weekend warrior – and that’s my story
Living in the past and holding on to former glory
Don’t give away my secret – it’s my fatal weakness
I just sit here wishing that the good times never end
And I got nothing – and nothing’s in my way

Something to Live For
05:51

You’ll never be the president; never be that one percent that owns everything
You won’t trade with inside men, you won’t cave and you won’t bend the rules for them
They won’t trust you with the things that make or break the corporate kings
They’ll take all that they can find - through law and lie, tax and tithe...
I don’t mean to break your spirit – I just want to break your fall
Don’t get caught up in their schemes
Sifting through the ashes of the white man’s dream
Burn the flag if you need something to keep you warm
‘Cuz you’ve got something to live for.
Shoot yourself in the foot to avoid the war
Buying low selling high, backroom deals made on the sly
Up and down upon a whim –always theirs to lose or win
As the markets crash and burn - the poor and weak will feed the furnace
Underneath the war machine through mind control, blind and cold
I don’t mean to break your spirit –I’ll spirit you away
Don’t let them make you pick up the pieces of the games that they play
Burn the flag if you need something to keep you warm
‘Cuz you’ve got something to live for.
Shoot yourself in the foot to avoid the war
‘Cuz you’ve got something to live for.
Even old men on the side of the road drinking wine at nine in the morning
Got something to live for.
Don’t ever doubt or think that you live without
Something to live for…
To those that think they pull the strings and got their hands in everything
To those who think there is no choice – afraid to speak with their own voice
When the rich man’s son is on the front lines – then I’ll think about sending mine
Forgive me but I love my son more than I love America
I don’t mean to be no traitor
I just want to make you see
You don’t have to give up your freedoms
Just to be free

Sky

Heading out from my hometown so long ago it seems
I journeyed to a western town I’d seen once in a dream
A long long way across a land so beautiful and free
And high above there was a voice so sweetly calling me
The rocky coast is good for most to live out all their days
And restless thoughts are often lost or fade away with age
But for me security was just a padded cell
So to all I‘d come to know I gave a fond farewell
I knew some help and comfort in the towns that I would stay
And found the charms of open arms some nights along the way
But these were not a home or love to last but for a night
And I was on the road again upon first morning’s light
The road ahead rose like a snake around a mountain side
The cliffs with jagged rocks below had claimed a thousand lives
The wind that fanned the flame that burned the bridges once I’d pass
Brought the rain that hit the ground as hard as shattered glass
Lightning crashed and thunder roared -the rain turned into hail
I slept beneath that mighty storm so powerless and frail
All night long and each day since I’ve had to wonder why
What I’d done to bear the hate that poured out from the sky
A waterfall that spilled out like the wounds of Jesus Christ
Resurrected in a rose whose petals blush the night
An early morning rainbow poured its color from the sky
And drew its mighty arc across the road less traveled by
The visions I had followed there appeared before my eyes
And carved in stone the town and home I’d thought I’d never find
And thanks I give for there I lived a short and blissful time
I never did feel so alone the day I said goodbye
I returned to my hometown- please don’t ask me why
And now I sit and dream away the days of all my life
Don’t you shed a tear for me- and please heed my advice
If you dream of new horizons go and don’t think twice
The sky will rise against the tide to cool the setting sun
And though my journey's at and end, for others just begun
A moment’s touch of wanderlust will drive a man to find
The path to dreams that others leave to wish on stars and sky

Seasons

Spring is a carpet of green
The sun shines its life-giving beams
Awakens the flowering fields
A garden of color the sunlight reveals
Treasure that the earth yields
Summers a fiery dream
Cooled by a swim in a stream
Dried under cloudless blue skies
Fading to nighttime it closes its eyes
And the fire subsides
Autumns a soft gentle breeze
Stirring the shift in the trees
Red yellow orange leaves glow
And fall to the ground so another may grow
As the northern winds blow
Winters a blind aching cold
Chill cutting down to the soul
Sweet dreams in front of the fire
Warming our bones till its time to retire
As the howling grows higher

Bad Dreamers
And their gambling ways
Nothing to lose
And nothing to gain
The thrill of the moment
When the horse is ahead
Just leaves you empty in the end
An easy mark
My heart on my sleeve
I’m always losing
And still I believe
One day I’ll be walking
On those paved golden streets
On the day when Pretty Rose comes in
I’m a Bad Dreamer
It's bad for my health
Feeding the slot machines - more than I feed myself
But I got a good feeling –I’m going all in
Notify my next of kin
When she’s at the start - She’s breathing heavy
Let her go boys; she’s always ready
Pulling on the reins, open up the gate…
I know my Pretty Rose is coming in
Bad Dreamers
Tattered and torn
Bad news coming from the overhead horns
Ticket falls from my shaking hand
When I hear them say the winner’s name…
All the pretty horses – have all crossed the line
Gone are the days of roses and wine
My Pretty Rose lost by a nose
I’ll never say her name again

Loss for words, never heard a better
story out of nowhere that I can recall
You’ll be an star on the movie screen
Before you’re seventeen or not at all
Sit and wish for things that you will never hold
See how far you’ll get before you get too old
You won’t see California with just a taste for gold
Keep on trying as the winter comes in cold
You’re a star and you look far ahead
To the moment in the spotlight as the carpet rolls out red
Here’s your scene - up on the movie screen
Even though its make-believe it goes right to your head
Sit and wish for things that you will never see
Got a thousand miles to go before you sleep
But you still see California and the golden city’s key
But you’ll go without my blessing; there’s nothing there for me
Comes a day when the rays of light
Come shining on the silver of the painted maple leaves
You’ll be back; you won’t burn your bridges
You were always wise beyond your dreams
Sit and watch the things that you will never touch
Out the window heading eastward on the bus
You’re leaving California – your dream left in the dust
And tell yourself you never really wanted it that much

Here and There
I am here and you are there
I’m not angry any longer
As I cower in the corner
Stronger feelings push me to the side
Im still weak and it was weeks ago
Living in denial only holds a little while
Never found a way to reconcile
The longing for another life to spoil
I am here and you are there
And I feel the distance
There can be no forgiveness
For letting mysteries unveil
I am not the all and mighty one
That somehow you made me out to be
Hard to see how I could have fooled you for so long
Just shallow minds waiting for some better times
I was here and you were there
Poor excuse for conversation
I don’t believe in explanations
Just hollow sounds in an empty room
You were bombed out like a Dresden doll
When I came home with the rising sun
All your friends were spilled out on the floor
Bottle in your hand – I think I understand
I am here and you are there
As I’ve been all too often
From inside the coffin
I hammer home the final nail
I’m afraid I’ve lost my sense of time
My eyes complain as the darkness fades
The curtain falls on the last charade
And the coat check girl leads you to the world

The city, they cut down the tree; ‘cuz its roots had all died
I used to sit with my back to it out of the sun’s blinding eye
And wished I had someone to carry my name when I’m gone
And tried to define passing time in the lines of a song
Its all or nothing
‘Cuz nobody listens
To the words to the wise unless they’re disguised in a song
You don’t realize you’re truly enlightened
Until you find it was something you knew all along
The last time you left me I didn’t get out of bed for four days
I broke all the records in the jukebox that we used to play
I broke my last wineglass reaching for the last sip of wine
Wishing that you’d realize what you’d left behind
I’m going to quit my job and let my hair grow out long
Spend all my days at my desk writing all that is wrong
Spend all my nights breaking vows and breaking hearts that aren’t mine
And though every word is a lie I’ll be doing just fine
