All Or Nothing (RPM 2008)

from Lowlife by Michael Krapovicky

/

about

This version was included on my first CD originally called simply "Acoustic"which I self-released and burned copies to sell, etc. Original key and recording of the song, written for the RPM Challenge in 2008- the first time I did the Challenge, and the first song that came from that experiment. The RPM Challenge is where you are challenged to produce 35 minutes of music in the month of February. I enlisted a work-mate Bruce Hobart to play fiddle on the track, as well as my band mate Eric Bauer to play the drums on the record. It was soon after completing the Challenge that year that I was let go from my job, becoming a full-time musician - and have been ever since. This song, as well as Lowlife, helped propel me into the world of music as a solo artist...

lyrics

The city, they cut down the tree; ‘cuz its roots had all died
I used to sit with my back to it out of the sun’s blinding eye
And wished I had someone to carry my name when I’m gone
And tried to define passing time in the lines of a song

Its all or nothing
‘Cuz nobody listens
To the words to the wise unless they’re disguised in a song
You don’t realize you’re truly enlightened
Until you find it was something you knew all along

The last time you left me I didn’t get out of bed for four days
I broke all the records in the jukebox that we used to play
I broke my last wineglass reaching for the last sip of wine
Wishing that you’d realize what you’d left behind

I’m going to quit my job and let my hair grow out long
Spend all my days at my desk writing all that is wrong
Spend all my nights breaking vows and breaking hearts that aren’t mine
And though every word is a lie I’ll be doing just fine
